Why So Many Beer Bottles Suddenly Look So Different

You'd know a can of Budweiser anywhere. Like many other major brands, whether it's Coca-Cola, M&Ms, or BMW, Bud's red and white packaging is instantly recognizable. It's familiar, it's safe, and it's universally likeable. But recently Budweiser, along with several other ubiquitous beer makers including Miller Lite, Heineken, and Sam Adams, have made major changes to their iconic packaging. Here's why.

It's Friday afternoon, you've made it through the long week, and it's time for Happy Hour, Gizmodo's weekly booze column. A cocktail shaker full of innovation, science, and alcohol. Bottles and cans, just clap your hands.

Over the past few years, the shelves of your local liquor store have become crowded with craft beer and artisanal ingredients. But Bud's brand is all about being a comforting, unwavering staple. So why is it?along with a crowd of other major beer companies?changing?

Turns out there are lots of reasons. But before we get into the why, let's take a look at the how. Because the next time you order your favorite cold brew, the bottle it comes in could be downright unrecognizable.

Miller Lite

For the first time since 1973, MillerCoors has totally revamped the classic longneck. The torso of the bottle, so to speak, has been elongated, and the neck is slightly shorter. Miller design folks say that's to make it easier to drink. It looks a little more streamlined?and loses the swirled neck that was added a few years back?but holds onto key elements like brown glass. The profile is similar, and the diameter is the same, but there's also a new raised portion on the glass. Ever find yourself peeling off the label of a bottle? According MillerCoors' packaging and design lead Charles Ho Fung, that's called the "the fiddle factor," the bottle's proverbial comfort blanket towards which your fingers naturally gravitate. This new bit gives you something to fiddle with long after the label's been torn to shreds.

Budweiser:

Budweiser, of course, has a number of different beers on the shelf, whether it's good old Bud Light or Bud Light Lime or even Black Crown. The latest addition to that line is the same Bud classic that you know and love, but in a bow tie-shaped can that echoes the classic flared logo the company has used since the 50s. The result is a can that's puckered in the middle. It's the same dimensions as other 12-ounce cans, but because its waistline is slimmer, you get 0.7 ounces less beer. Budweiser's VP of Innovation, Pat McGauley, told us the bow tie cans are here to stay, they'll be sold in an incremental 8-can pack that'll fit on the shelves between existing sixers and 12-packs.

Heineken:

Heineken is ditching the squatty look of its old bottles for the first time in two decades. The new packaging for 12- and 22-ounce Heineken and Heineken Light is called the Star Bottle. Its has stronger shoulders and a taller, slimmer neck. It also has a curved embossed star with the Heineken logo on one side. This is similar to the revamped Miller Lite bottle, in that it's there for you to tinker with.

Sam Adams:

Sam Adams has a new can that's supposed to more closely match the experience of drinking from a glass. This is the one redesign where flavor actually seems to be a major factor. Called the "Sam Can," it has a flared lip and a wider top, opening up the air flow so you actually smell what you're drinking. The differences are slight, but noticeable. The ridge where the can becomes the rim is also shaped differently. While most cans have a fairly straight profile, the Sam Can has a slight hourglass curve to it, bowing out at the top to accomodate the wider mouth.

New Form, Same Function

Now the why. Beer companies are fighting a war of attrition. They want to stay at the forefront of our booze-addled brains (and wallets) in a market that offers plenty of options with funky names like Dogfish and Magic Hat. Artisanal culture has introduced us to ingredients like apricot and chocolate, along with psychedelic new label and bottle designs?all of which scream hey! I'm not signing up for what the man is trying to serve me. The microbrew you're drinking might have a lot to do with taste?but it also has everything to do with style.

"You hold a beer in your hand and it says something about you," says Craig Dubitsky, founder of design-conscious household products company, Hello. "So how do you do that? You change how it looks. It needs to be sexier, it needs to be shinier, and it needs to be shapelier. The can says that you're different and if you're not different, your beer can be."

Technological innovations through the years have been pretty limited as far as beer is concerned. In the beginning, cans were made from steel, then there was a move to aluminum. Then came the pull tabs, followed by the tab that stays on the packaging as you know it today. Brewing technology may have changed incrementally, but ultimately, beer is pretty basic stuff: alcohol, water, and hops. So instead, companies innovate on the aesthetic. On top of that, added Ho Fung, people just care about design more these days. "The new Miller Lite bottle came about because of the sensitivity of design with our consumers is going up?companies like Target, Apple, and Ikea increased accessibility to good design," he said.

But in the end, it all comes back to staying relevant, being hip, and getting you to buy, buy, buy. Though you might not think about it when you're running into the grocery store to buy drinks for a tailgate, but companies spend millions of dollars on strategies that play on your emotions. "When we can tie relevant iconic elements like Clydesdales, or like the bow tie into our core branding messaging, it drives a greater connection and creates an emotional bond," Budweiser's VP of innovation Pat McGauley said to Giz.

Ho Fung told us that the team at Miller Lite "identified that there's a lot behind emotion and purchase intent. If we could elicit a positive emotional reaction from the consumer, we'll drive purchase intent." So, just like your average relationship, beer brands are trying to keep things interesting. To put it in romantic terms, sure, your longneck is wearing a fancy new party dress. But it's not just intended to seduce you?it's meant to keep you engaged in the relationship and coming back for more.

That explains why Sam Adams spent two years in ergonomics research and testing, and over a million dollars on its can. And why Budweiser spent three years and millions of dollars creating an entirely new machine and materials strong enough to mold the can into a bow tie shape. Look at it this way: Budweiser is the mainstream straight-laced boy next door your dad likes. He's joined a band and gotten a tattoo and a $90 haircut in hopes you'll date him. He's still the same guy?he just has a new look.

GOP's Rand Paul raises profile with eye on 2016

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Sen. Rand Paul says he's only "considering" running for president. But he's actually doing much more than mulling it over.

The Kentucky Republican is unabashedly clearing a path to seek the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, with a series of early voting state visits, a beefed-up political operation and a deliberate plan to appeal to mainstream voters and raise his national profile.

Paul's road is far from easy, given the galaxy of Republican stars considering running for the party's presidential nod ? former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, 2012 vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan and more. But Paul enjoys tea party backing and a network of supporters from father Ron Paul's back-to-back White House bids.

Among the challenges facing the 50-year-old freshman senator: He must convince Republican mainstream voters that he is more than a tea party champion or simply heir to his libertarian dad's ideals. And he has begun making the case that he could bridge the divide between Republican voters and those who overwhelmingly choose Democrats. At historically black Howard University last month, Paul said the GOP needs to appeal to black voters and other minorities. And he's adopted a more welcoming tone toward Hispanics by pledging to "find a place" for working immigrants.

Paul's presidential coming-out begins on Friday in early-voting Iowa.

The senator is billed as the main speaker at the state Republican Party's annual spring fundraising event ? called the Lincoln Day Dinner ? in Cedar Rapids. He'll also address the Iowa Federation of Republican women and meet with Johnson County Republicans during the two-day trip.

Ten days later, Paul is slated to deliver the keynote address at a similar event for the New Hampshire GOP ? the Liberty Dinner ? in that important early primary state. He'll cap May's busy travel schedule with a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California on May 31.

The senator also has plans to attend a June 28 fundraiser for Republicans in South Carolina, another early-primary state in presidential nominating campaigns. Paul made his interest in the state known last week when, in a break with national Republicans, he supported scandal-scarred former Gov. Mark Sanford in an ultimately successful bid to return to the U.S. House.

He also plans to return to Iowa in June to meet with evangelical pastors who tend to influence a loyal segment of the state's GOP caucus-goers.

From his schedule and statements, Paul is unlike most prospective candidates, who play coy about their intentions. Paul and his team are being upfront about it ? with the same kind of candor that has attracted a huge tea party following.

"We're considering it," Paul told Washington reporters last month. Yet he added: "We won't make a decision before 2014."

Aides say that timeline still stands but that Paul has begun on a path to a White House campaign.

"You can be doing things that have a purpose whether or not you make that other decision," said adviser Doug Stafford. "They still make you a national leader."

Paul's staffing choices also point to a presidential run.

Stafford recently left his position as the senator's chief of staff to become executive director of the political action committee ? Rand PAC ? charged with starting to put the pieces in place for a possible national campaign.

Among the most important things Paul has done is a carefully built alliance with Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, also of Kentucky, after beating McConnell's hand-picked candidate for Senate in 2010. The resulting overlap of top political staff suggests a level of trust between the two.

The partnership has helped Paul, a onetime outsider, gain entrance with the Republican establishment while keeping the tea party's anti-establishment element off McConnell's back. And while it's not clear whether McConnell would endorse Paul in a 2016 presidential field, McConnell would have no qualms publicly lauding Paul's seriousness as a candidate, McConnell aides said.

The prospects of a Paul candidacy became a hotter topic in political circles after the senator's high-profile, 13-hour filibuster in March over the Obama administration's use of unmanned military aircraft to target terrorist suspects. At the time, Paul said he opposed using drones on American soil, but then made some libertarians flinch by adding later that he didn't care if a police officer or a drone killed an armed robber. He said that using technology to stop any imminent threat was acceptable.

According to a Gallup poll taken in March, most people don't think drones should be used in the U.S., an opinion held across party lines.

Paul's stepped-up national presence is not unique among his potential presidential rivals. Bush has said he's open to a run for the White House. Similarly, Rubio has staked out a visible role in bipartisan immigration legislation that is beginning to move through Congress.

But Paul has some advantages in early voting states. His father's support network is one.

In Iowa, his father's former campaign aides hold senior positions in the state Republican Party committee. Paul also is close to former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, a hero in the tea party movement who has a deep network in that state.

In New Hampshire, where his father finished second in the 2012 primary, Paul's fiscal hawkishness could play well with the state's independent voters.

Even so, Paul is bound to face tough scrutiny from key Republican constituencies for statements and positions that challenge GOP orthodoxy on social and national security policy.

He raised eyebrows when he said recently that fighting gay marriage in Congress is a losing proposition, based on the nation's increasing acceptance of same-sex unions, and that he didn't "mind if the government tries to be neutral on the issue." Paul, who opposes same-sex marriage, has said the issue is better argued at the state level.

But aides acknowledge that some devout evangelical conservatives in early primary states such as Iowa and South Carolina won't accept Paul's argument.

Among those who do ? for now, at least ? is Iowa Republican National Committee member Tamara Scott, one of Iowa's leading Christian conservatives. She sees it this way: "He's trying to strategize where we can keep marriage as God designed."

Another recent Paul remark ? that Republicans have been too willing to deploy military forces around the globe ? could sting him in South Carolina, a state with many veterans and active-duty troops.

Paul isn't nearly as rigid on international affairs as his father, whose opposition to deploying the military to keep Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons hurt him in Iowa during last year's caucuses. But both talk of a desire to reduce federal spending on foreign aid and a less aggressive role for the U.S. military.

iPhone growth stalls as Android continues to nip away at Apple?s market share

Tablet, smartphone market share Q1 2013

A new report has found that mobile device shipments, including notebooks, tablets and smartphones, exceeded 300 million units in the first quarter of 2013. According to research from Canalys, shipments increased 37.4% year-over-year to reach 308.7 units. Android manufacturers continue to ship more devices than any other vendor, totaling 59.5% of all shipments. Strong demand for the iPhone and iPad gave Apple a 19.3% share, ahead of Microsoft?s 18.1% share from shipments of Windows-powered notebooks, tablets and smartphones.

[More from BGR: Samsung Galaxy S4: Jack of all trades, still master of just one]

The research firm found that out of all three categories, the tablet market continues to grow the fastest. Worldwide shipments of tablets were found to have increased 106.1% year-over-year to 41.9 million units. Apple continues to lead the market with a 46.4% share, although Google, Amazon and other Android vendors have begun to eat away at the company?s once dominant market share.

[More from BGR: This is the back of a $640 phone]

Smartphone shipments grew 47.9% year-over-year in Q1 to 216.3 million units with Android devices accounting for 75.6% of all shipments. Samsung dominated all other vendors once again, growing its volume by 64.3% year-over-year, and giving it a market share above 32%. Apple, in contrast, only experienced modest annual growth of 6.7%, the lowest level since the launch of the original iPhone back in 2007. The company still shipped 37 million iPhones, however, so it?s not as if it?s in dire straits.

?HTC and Samsung have raised the bar with their latest handsets and Apple needs to respond with its next iPhone,? said Pete Cunningham, Canalys Principal Analyst. ?The iPhone user interface is now six years old and badly in need of a refresh. Hardware-wise, the biggest dilemma that Apple faces is what it does with the size of the display on the next iPhone. It cannot afford to ignore the trend for larger displays in premium smart phones.?

Rounding out the top five were Huawei, ZTE and LG, all with less than 5% market share each. Huawei and ZTE continue to experience strong sales in China, representing 84% and 71% of their shipments respectively, while LG has benefited from doubling down on its smartphone business.

Notebook PC shipments fell 13.1% from the same period in 2012, reaching only 50.5 million units as consumers shifted their focus to tablets.

?While there are macroeconomic factors that contribute to this ongoing trend, the impact of tablets must not be understated,? said Canalys Research Analyst Pin-Chen Tang. ?The combination of ARM-based chipsets and Android has taken computing devices to new, lower price points. If Microsoft and Intel are serious about capitalizing on this exploding market, both will need to ensure that their OEMs can remain competitive on price.?

State Department Is Demanding the Removal of the 3D-Printed Gun Plans

After finding its way to over 100,000 hard drives in a matter of mere days, the blueprints for the world's first fully 3D-printed gun have finally been pulled from the designer's website at the request of the US State Department.

As digital files for highly regulated weapons, 3D-printed gun blueprints currently fall into a bit of a legal gray area, namely with export control laws known as the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). And because the group behind the plans, Defense Distributed, uploaded the files online, they could have easily been downloaded overseas.

Now, this may or may not have violated the United States' strict export controls over firearms. But because this is such new territory, the State Department is demanding that these blueprints?along with nine other 3D-printable firearm components?be removed until they're able to determine whether or not this is considered a violation.

The State Department, though, isn't just demanding that the files be removed from Defense Distributed's own website, Defcad.org, but from all public access whatsoever. And as anyone who's ever had anything even remotely embarrassing pop up online knows, totally erasing the offending data from the web is a near impossible task. Especially with something as high-profile and controversial as these blueprints, which are already appearing on torrenting sites.

These files are, supposedly, the most heavily downloaded file on The Pirate Bay at the moment. So try as the State Department might, now that the blueprints have been set free, they're certainly not going to be going away any time soon. Because if anything's going to make the public want to get a hold of these files, it's telling them they can't have it?especially with no real way of enforcing the ban. The full text of the Department's removal request as obtained by Forbes follows. [Forbes via Fast Company]

May 08, 2013

In reply letter to DTCC Case: 13-0001444

[Cody Wilson's address redacted]

Dear Mr. Wilson,

The Department of State, Bureau of Political Military Affairs, Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance, Enforcement Division (DTCC/END) is responsible for compliance with and civil enforcement of the Arms Export Control Act (22 U.S.C. 2778) (AECA) and the AECA?s implementing regulations, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (22 C.F.R. Parts 120-130) (ITAR). The AECA and the ITAR impose certain requirements and restrictions on the transfer of, and access to, controlled defense articles and related technical data designated by the United States Munitions List (USML) (22 C.F.R. Part 121).

The DTCC/END is conducting a review of technical data made publicly available by Defense Distributed through its 3D printing website, DEFCAD.org, the majority of which appear to be related to items in Category I of the USML. Defense Distributed may have released ITAR-controlled technical data without the required prior authorization from the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), a violation of the ITAR.

Technical data regulated under the ITAR refers to information required for the design, development, production, manufacture, assembly, operation, repair, testing, maintenance or modification of defense articles, including information in the form of blueprints, drawings, photographs, plans, instructions or documentation. For a complete definition of technical data, see 120.10 of the ITAR. Pursuant to 127.1 of the ITAR, it is unlawful to export any defense article or technical data for which a license or written approval is required without first obtaining the required authorization from the DDTC. Please note that disclosing (including oral or visual disclosure) or tranferring technical data to a foreign person, whether in the United States or abroad, is considered an export under 120.17 of the ITAR.

The Department believes Defense Distributed may not have established the proper jurisdiction of the subject technical data. To resolve this matter officially, we request that Defense Distributed submit Commodity Jurisdiction (CJ) determination requests for the following selection of data files available on DEFCAD.org, and any other technical data for which Defense Distributed is unable to determine proper jurisdiction:

  1. Defense Distributed Liberator pistol
  2. .22 electric
  3. 125mm BK-14M high-explosive anti-tank warhead
  4. 5.56/.223 muzzle brake
  5. Springfield XD-40 tactical slide assembly
  6. Sound Moderator ? slip on
  7. ?The Dirty Diane? 1/2-28 to 3/4-16 STP S3600 oil filter silencer adapter
  8. 12 gauge to .22 CB sub-caliber insert
  9. Voltlock electronic black powder system
  10. VZ-58 sight

DTCC/END requests that Defense Distributed submits its CJ requests within three weeks of the receipt of this letter and notify this office of the final CJ determinations. All CJ requests must be submitted electronically through an online application using the DS-4076 Commodity Jurisdiction Request Form. The form, guidance for submitting CJ requests, and other relevant information such as a copy of the ITAR can be found on DDTC?s website at http://www.pmddtc.state.gov.

Until the Department provides Defense Distributed with the final CJ determinations, Defense Distributed should treat the above technical data as ITAR-controlled. This means that all such data should be removed from public access immediately. Defense Distributed should also review the remainder of the data made public on its website to determine whether any additional data may be similarly controlled and proceed according to ITAR requirements.

Additionally, DTCC/END requests information about the procedures Defense Distributed follows to determine the classification of its technical data, to include aforementioned technical data files. We ask that you provide your procedures for determining proper jurisdiction of technical data within 30 days of the date of this letter to Ms. Bridget Van Buren, Compliance Specialist, Enforcement Division, at the address below.

Fungus in Capri Sun? Yes, but so what?

Yes, scientists found five types of fungus in Capri Sun beverages after consumers reported finding mats of mold in the popular kids' drinks. But they're mostly harmless.

By Rachael Rettner,?MyHealthNewsDaily.com / May 2, 2013

Five types of fungus have been identified in the popular kids' juice drink Capri Sun, researchers say.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The study was spurred by reports of consumers finding mold ? mats of fungus consisting of millions of cells ? in the drink.

While the findings have an "ick" factor, the fungi probably aren't harmful to most people, said study researcher Kathleen Dannelly, associate professor microbiology at Indiana State University. Fungi are all around us ? in the soil, air, and even on our skin and inside our digestive tract ? but they are generally kept in check by our immune systems.

"Probably, those of us with healthy immune systems, we could even eat that, and that wouldn?t be a problem," Dannelly said, referring to the fungal mats in Capri Sun.

However, for people with compromised immune systems, such as those with AIDS, leukemia or cystic fibrosis, fungus exposure may be a health concern, Dannelly said.

For instance, the fungus Aspergillus is found in air, and most people breathe it in without problems.

Kraft, which manufactures Capri Sun, acknowledges that mold can grow in the drink, but says such reports are not common.

"Since there are no preservatives in our drinks, mold can grow, especially in a leaking pouch," Kraft says on its Capri Sun frequently asked questions website.

During the manufacturing process, the drinks are heated to temperatures that exceed those used for pasteurization. But punctures in the products' package ? even microscopic ones ? can allow air inside the package, and mold to grow, Kraft says. Fungi need oxygen to grow, Dannelly said.

Capri Sun packages have a shelf life of about a year. The company urges consumers to discard leaking or damaged packages.

In the new study, the researchers filtered Capri Sun through filter paper, and then checked whether any microorganisms were left behind on the paper. The juice contained just a few fungal cells, which grew in laboratory dishes.

Dannelly said if this experiment was done on any juice after it was opened and left in the refrigerator, she would expect both fungus and bacteria to grow.

In a second experiment, the researchers, including Leah Horn, an undergraduate biology major, punctured Capri Sun packages with a sterile needle to mimic damage to the product. When left in a sterile environment for three weeks, fungal mats grew in the juice.

A problem with Capri Sun is that the packages are not see-through, so unlike mold on bread or cheese, consumers can't tell when Capri Sun goes bad.

Kraft said it tried creating clear packages for Capri Sun, but stopped making the packages after it created manufacturing problems.

The company said it will not add preservatives to the product because their customers don't want this. Preservatives give food a longer shelf life, but some, such as the preservative nitrite, have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers.

Dannelly said there are some natural preservatives, such as citric acid, which are not harmful and could be added to the product (although it would make the product more acidic).

"If you're going to have a package you can't see through, I think you need to do something," Dannelly said.

The study has not yet been published in a peer reviewed journal, but the researchers plan to submit the work for publication.

Pass it on: Five types of fungus have been found in Capri Sun, but they are likely not harmful.

Friends prepare to say goodbye to Chris Kelly

Chris Kelly's family and friends began the process of saying goodbye to their loved one. Mourners gathered at an Atlanta funeral home Wednesday for the late Kris Kross rapper's public viewing, a day prior to his scheduled funeral service at Atlanta's Jackson Memorial Baptist Church.

"He will be very missed, especially within our family," Kelly's uncle, Lemar Williams, told the New York Daily News outside the Murray Brothers Funeral Home. "To the world he was Kris Kross, but to us he was just Chris."

NEWS: Celebs react to rapper's death

A photo of Kelly was being passed around, with admirers writing messages like "Rest in Peace" and "Keep Jumpin' in Heaven." Some of Kris Kross' hits played in the background, as guest slowly walked to greet his coffin.

The late hip-hop star's autopsy showed no indication of foul play, E! News confirmed. The cause of death is currently pending toxicology results, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office.

Map locates a deadly limousine fire near San Francisco

(AP) ? A stretch limousine that burst into flames on a San Francisco Bay bridge, killing five women inside, was carrying one too many passengers, investigators said Monday.

The state Public Utilities Commission had authorized the vehicle to carry eight or fewer passengers, but it had nine on the night of the deadly fire, California Highway Patrol Capt. Mike Maskarich said. He did not comment on whether the overcrowding may have been a factor in the deaths.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, and the vehicle has not yet been inspected, Maskarich said.

The Lincoln Town Car was packed with young women celebrating a girls' night out with a newlywed bride when it went up in flames Saturday night on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. The driver and four women were able to escape.

The newlywed woman was among the dead.

The driver, Orville Brown, said at first he misunderstood what one of the passengers in the back was saying when she knocked on the partition between the passenger area and the driver compartment and complained about smelling smoke.

With the music turned up, he initially thought the woman was asking if she could smoke. Seconds later, he said, the women knocked again, this time screaming, "Smoke, smoke!" and "Pull over," Brown told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/10jcd0t ).

He helped four of the surviving women escape through the partition. One of the women ran around to the passenger door on the back side of the limo, but by then it was engulfed in flames.

"When she opened that back door, I knew it wasn't a good scene," Brown said. "I figured with all that fire that they were gone, man. There were just so many flames. Within maybe 90 seconds, the car was fully engulfed."

The five dead were found huddled near the partition, apparently unable to squeeze through. They have not yet been identified.

"My guess would be they were trying to get away from the fire and use that window opening as an escape route," said San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and extinguished the blaze. Investigators have done preliminary interviews with survivors and the driver but need to re-interview them, Maskarich said.

The investigation was expected to take several weeks to complete, he added.

Two of the survivors were still hospitalized Monday in critical condition.

Investigators were trying to determine whether any crime occurred. Foucrault said they doubted that the blaze involved criminal activity.

Relatives told the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News that one of the dead was Neriza Fojas, a 31-year-old registered nurse from Fresno who recently wed and was planning to travel to her native Philippines to hold another ceremony before family. Her friends in the limousine were fellow nurses.

Brown, 46, of San Jose, said he was taking the women across the bridge to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City. Fojas' sister, Rosalyn Bersamin, told the Chronicle that after a night out on the town, Fojas and her friends were heading to the hotel to celebrate with her new husband.

"She was a hard worker, a loving sister," a sobbing Bersamin said.

Aerial video shot after the fire showed about one-third of the back half of the limousine had been scorched. Its taillights and bumper were gone, and it appeared to be resting on its rims, but the remainder of the vehicle didn't appear to be damaged.

A photo taken by a witness and broadcast on KTVU-TV showed flames shooting from the back of the limo.

Brown said he wishes he could have done more.

"It's something you never imagine will happen," he told the Chronicle. "It's a limousine ride. It's supposed to be a joyous thing."

Brown said he is an experienced commercial driver who has operated airport shuttles and trucks.

He started driving for Limo Stop Inc. two months earlier and had put in about six shifts behind the wheel of the Town Car that caught fire, he said.

Medical examiners will identify the victims by using dental records. Foucrault said the autopsies will include toxicology tests, as well as examinations into whether any accelerant such as alcohol or gasoline was found on the bodies.

The CHP said the four other women who escaped the fire were being treated at nearby hospitals for burns and smoke inhalation. They were identified as Mary G. Guardiano, 42, of Alameda; Jasmine Desguia, 34, of San Jose; Nelia Arrellano, 36, of Oakland; and Amalia Loyola, 48, of San Leandro.

Desguia and Loyola were listed in critical condition Monday, a spokeswoman for Valley Medical Center said. The condition of Arrellano, who was taken to another hospital, was not known.

A spokeswoman for Community Medical Center in Fresno said one or more of its employees were in the limo.

Limo Stop offers service through limousines, vans and SUVS. Records of the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates limousine companies, showed the company is properly licensed and insured.

The company issued a statement pledging to do "everything possible" to help determine the cause of the fire and "bring forth answers and provide closure" to victims and their families.

David Chang, Paul Kahan tie for top chef honor

NEW YORK (AP) ? Food may not have been their first calling, but coming late to the culinary scene clearly hasn't slowed David Chang and Paul Kahan.

On Monday, the two were jointly honored as the nation's most outstanding chefs by the James Beard Foundation, an exclamation point on circuitous careers that began in other fields ? Chang in finance and Kahan in computer science ? but saw them quickly ascend to the top of the restaurant world.

The men ? only the third pair to tie for the top chef award in the foundation's history ? have been lauded as restaurant revolutionaries. Chang's edgy, in-your-face style ? not to mention a deft hand with steamed pork buns ? has spawned a global empire of media and restaurants, including New York's Momofuku Ko and Ma Peche ? some of the hottest, hard-to-get tables in the city.

"I grew up dreaming what it might be like to do this and how impossible it might be," said Chang, who said he has idolized Kahan for years. "I'm really, truly honored. A tie could not have been better because I'm glad I'm not up here by myself."

Chang owes his second career largely to an obsession with ramen noodles, which led him to Tokyo and eventually back to school for a culinary degree (his first had been in religion). By 2004, he opened his first restaurant, Momofuku Noodle Bar, and accolades piled up. New York Times critic Frank Bruni even called Chang "the New York restaurant world's equivalent of Tiger Woods or Roger Federer."

Kahan is at the forefront of Chicago's increasingly robust restaurant scene. After leaving computer science, he spent years apprenticing to some of the city's top talent, including Rick Bayless. He spun that experience into an award-winning restaurant group that includes Blackbird, Avec and The Publican, all of which reflect his own culinary obsession ? sustainably sourced ingredients and close relationships with producers.

"You can't beat Chang, but a tie is OK," Kahan said.

The James Beard awards honor those who follow in the footsteps of Beard, considered the dean of American cooking when he died in 1985. Monday's ceremony honored chefs and restaurants; a similar event on Friday was held for book and other media awards. Previous ties for the outstanding chef award went to Larry Forgione and Jean-Louis Palladin in 1993, and Wolfgang Puck and Jean-Georges Vongerichten in 1998.

Chang has won three previous Beard awards, including for best new restaurant for Momofuku Ko in 2009 and rising star chef in 2007. Kahan was named a regional best chef in 2004. Both men lost out for the same honor last year to Daniel Humm, the chef behind New York's Eleven Madison Park.

The foundation's top restaurant award this year went to Dan Barber's Blue Hill in New York City. Barber ? who was the foundation's top chef in 2009 ? follows a minimalist culinary philosophy that he calls "American seasonal." He believes exceptional ingredients should be allowed to stand on their own. A signature dish is "vegetables on a fence," baby vegetables simply prepared and presented speared on a row of upright prongs.

"I feel like the luckiest chef in America today," Barber said. He jokingly credited his restaurant's success in part to the difficulty of finding it on New York's back streets. "They are so much hungrier than they would have been," he said. "I have this feeling, this conviction that the food tastes better than it otherwise would."

State Bird Provisions in San Francisco ? known for its dizzying array of small plates served from a cart by husband-and-wife team Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski ? was named best new restaurant. Meanwhile, Del Posto ? Mario Batali's ode to fine dining in New York ? took home two awards, outstanding service and outstanding pastry chef (Brooks Headley).

The group's Lifetime Achievement award went to chef and restaurateur Cecilia Chiang, who founded San Francisco's Mandarin Restaurant and has been credited with introducing Mandarin cuisine to the United States.

The Humanitarian of the Year honor went to Emeril Lagasse, whose Emeril Lagasse Foundation in New Orleans supports nonprofit and educational programs aimed at disadvantaged children. The group's efforts, which are focused in communities where Lagasse has restaurants, have included creating an outdoor classroom, school gardens, a fresh foods cafeteria and a culinary learning center.

The Beard Foundation also named its top regional chefs around the country: Stephanie Izard of Girl & the Goat in Chicago (Great Lakes); Johnny Monis of Komi in Washington, D.C. (Mid-Atlantic); Colby Garrelts of Bluestem in Kansas City, Mo. (Midwest); Wylie Dufresne of wd-50 (New York City); Melissa Kelly of Primo in Rockland, Maine (Northeast); Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon in Portland, Ore. (Northwest); Tory McPhail of Commander's Palace in New Orleans (South); Joseph Lenn of The Barn at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tenn. (Southeast); Jennifer Jasinski of Rioja in Denver (Southwest); Christopher Kostow of The Restaurant at Meadowood in St. Helena, Calif. (West).

Video Marketing Can Be Easy With This Guide | Content for Reprint

    Word Count: 787 Date:

Are you the owner of an online business enterprise? Are you one of the millions of people who have yet to find the perfect marketing strategy? If you answered yes, then video marketing might be what you're looking for. Posting online videos can help you attract a whole new generation of customers, which can lead to more sales. Keep reading to find out how.

The best content will go viral. The quality of your camera is not the deciding factor. In most cases, the only thing needed to entice an online user to watch your video is an indication that it can offer valuable insight or solutions. You should buy a good video camera, but one that fits into your budget.

Do not fret about your video production value. There is more to a video than production value. Industry leaders have actually done quite well by using basic how-to content made by in-house employees.

You have to grab people's attention right away if you want them to view your entire video. You need to get their attention in the first few seconds. During this time, try to grab and hold their attention with a tantalizing teaser or an unexpected perspective. You want them to watch until the very end.

Tell viewers to perform a certain action in your videos. Having a "call to action" is important. Giving a call to action quite literally tells your viewers what to do next. For this to work, you must make it easy for your viewers.

People like honesty! Create a video on a topic that you are passionate about. Being natural or authentic can help viewers enjoy the videos and keep coming back for more from you.

Analyze your video's statistics. These allow you to identify how many people watched your video and at what time of the day it was watched. This is all a great deal of information to use in your marketing campaigns.

A video isn't going to go all viral on YouTube by itself. Email your family and friends, post a note on your Twitter and Facebook pages and put a notice up on your website. People cannot view it if they do not know it exists.

Your tone should be consistent from one video to another. Humor can be used in silly spoofs or educational videos, alike. Think about your product and the demographic you are striving for. These qualities, as well as your image, are the most important factors for your tone.

Try to let your unique personality come through in your videos. People want you to be personable and real. When they get a glimpse of your personality, they will begin to feel like they know you and will want to buy from you. They want to see what you look like to relate you to what you sell.

If you get asked a question quite a few times, creating a video to answer it is a good idea. While a lot of people have frequently asked question sections on their sites, most people don't want to read through all of that text. This allows them to choose how they receive the information and know exactly what they may be hunting for.

Your videos can also promote the rest of your marketing mix. Not everyone uses Facebook. They will begin to create a feedback loop of self-promotion. Make sure that your videos contain clear links to your social media pages, thus ensuring that more business comes your way.

Once you've collected data from statistics and comments on your videos, make another video! Put into practice what you've learned to improve the content and quality of your videos.

Think about holding a video contest to get more videos for your website. They can tell a joke, do something funny or create a how-to. User submitted videos are perfect opportunities for the viewers to take the stand and introduce themselves to their fellow peers online.

Put music in your videos. As you may have noticed, adding music to a video is a great way to make it more interesting. Conjure a suitable style of music and use it in the video. You will get more results from your video this way. Music is especially helpful to video makers who don't want to be seen on camera.

The more you know about video marketing, the more possibilities you will discover. Using video marketing is a great way to expand your pool of customers. You can certainly reach a broader audience and boost profits.

Atheist Military Organization Asks Pentagon to Court Martial Soldiers ...

Albuquerque, New Mexico ? An atheist organization that seeks freedom from religion in the military is asking officials at the Pentagon to court martial any soldier who shares their faith with other military personnel.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation, led by Mikey Weinstein, recently told reporter Todd Starnes that he wants to end?proselytization on military bases, and compared evangelistic activity to rape.

?Someone needs to be punished for this,? he said. ?Until the Air Force or Army or Navy or Marine Corps punishes a member of the military for unconstitutional religious proselytizing and oppression, we will never have the ability to stop this horrible, horrendous, dehumanizing behavior.?

?It is a version of being spiritually raped and you are being spiritually raped by fundamentalist Christian religious predators,? Weinstein asserted.

Starnes reports that Weinstein met with Pentagon officials on April 23rd in an effort to urge them to enforce current laws, which require military personnel to??balance constitutional protections for an individual?s free exercise of religion or other personal beliefs and the constitutional prohibition against governmental establishment of religion.?

?If a member of the military is proselytizing in a manner that violates the law, well then of course they can be prosecuted,? he stated. ?We would love to see hundreds of prosecutions to stop this outrage of fundamentalist religious persecution.?

Weinstein said that to promote one?s religion in the Armed Forces is ?sedition? and ?treason? and should be treated accordingly.

The Pentagon confirmed that?proselytization?is not permitted on military bases.

?Religious proselytization is not permitted within the Department of Defense,? spokesperson?Nate Christensen stated. ?Court martials and non-judicial punishments are decided on a case-by-case basis and it would be inappropriate to speculate on the outcome in specific cases.?

Those who are court martialed can either be dishonorably discharged or face jail time.

In response to Weinstein, Family Research Council has launched a petition drive to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to urge him to protect the free exercise of religion.

?Reports indicate that senior Pentagon officials have recently consulted with radical secularists to formulate a policy that would put military chaplains and other leaders who ?promote their personal religious beliefs to their subordinates or to extend preferential treatment for any religion? in danger of court-martial,? the petition states. ?Subverting the religious freedom of our troops both hurts the morale of our troops and puts our nation at risk by labeling courageous military personnel as enemies.?

?I urge you to resist the demands of anti-Christian activists who are calling for a court-martial order upon chaplains and service members who share their faith,? it continues. ?If Christian chaplains and other troops are censored from offering the full solace of the Gospel, there is no religious freedom in the military.?

As of press time, over 67,000 signatures have been received.

?The very troops who defend our religious freedom are at risk of having their own taken away,? the Washington-based organization lamented. ?If this policy goes forward, Christians within the military who speak of their faith could now be prosecuted as enemies of the state. ??Our brave troops deserve better.?
