A study in the current issue of Scientific Reports, a new online journal from the Nature Publishing Group, shows that small forage fish like anchovies can play an important role in the "biological pump," the process by which marine life transports carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and surface ocean into the deep seawhere it contributes nothing to current global warming.

The study, by Dr. Grace Saba of Rutgers University and professor Deborah Steinberg of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, reports on data collected during an oceanographic expedition to the California coast during Saba's graduate studies at VIMS. Saba, now a post-doctoral researcher in Rutgers' Institute of Marine and Coastal Research, earned her Ph.D. from the College of William and Mary's School of Marine Science at VIMS in 2009. The expedition, aboard the research vessel Point Sur, was funded by the National Science Foundation.

The study's focus on fish is a departure for Steinberg and colleagues in her Zooplankton Ecology Lab, who typically study tiny crustaceans called copepods. Research by Steinberg's team during the last two decades has revealed that copepods and other small, drifting marine animals play a key role in the biological pump by grazing on photosynthetic algae near the sea surface, then releasing the carbon they've ingested as "fecal pellets" that can rapidly sink to the deep ocean. The algal cells are themselves generally too small and light to sink.

"'Fecal pellet' is the scientific term for "poop," laughs Steinberg. "Previous studies in our lab and by other researchers show that zooplankton fecal pellets can sink at rates of hundreds to thousands of feet per day, providing an efficient means of moving carbon to depth. But there have been few studies of fecal pellets from fish, thus the impetus for our project."

Saba says, "We collected fecal pellets produced by northern anchovies, a forage fish, in the Santa Barbara Channel off the coast of southern California." She determined that sinking rates for the anchovies' fecal pellets average around 2,500 feet per day, extrapolating from the time required for pellets to descend through a cylinder of water during experiments in the shipboard lab.

At that rate, says Saba, "pellets produced at the surface would travel the 1,600 feet to the seafloor at our study site in less than a day."

Saba and Steinberg also counted the pellets' abundanceup to 6 per cubic meter of seawater, measured their carbon contentan average of 22 micrograms per pellet, and painstakingly identified their partly digested contentsmostly single-celled algae like dinoflagellates and diatoms.

"Twenty micrograms of carbon might not seem like much," says Steinberg, "but when you multiply that by the high numbers of forage fish and fecal pellets that can occur within nutrient-rich coastal zones, the numbers can really add up."

Saba and Steinberg calculate that the total "downward flux" of carbon within fish fecal pellets at their study site reached a maximum of 251 milligrams per square meter per dayequal to or greater than previously measured values of sinking organic matter collected by suspended "sediment traps."

"Our findings show thatgiven the right conditionsfish fecal pellets can transport significant amounts of repackaged surface material to depth, and do so relatively quickly," says Saba.

Those conditions are likely to occur in places like the western coasts of North and South America, where ocean currents impinge on continental shelves, bringing cold, nutrient-rich waters from depth into the sunlit surface zone.

(AP) ? Libya said Tuesday it should be allowed to prosecute one of former dictator Moammar Gadhafi's sons for crimes against humanity, but his lawyers objected, insisting the late ruler's son cannot get a fair trial in a nation now run by those who toppled his father.

The diametrically opposed positions came at an International Criminal Court hearing that will go a long way to deciding whether Seif al-Islam Gadhafi will be put on trial in Tripoli or The Hague.

The legal tug-of-war over Seif al-Islam also is a key test for a founding principle of the war crimes tribunal: known as "complementarity," the principle states that the court can only try suspects from nations unable or unwilling to launch their own prosecutions.

ICC prosecutors charged Seif al-Islam last year with murder and persecution for his alleged involvement in the deadly crackdown on dissent against his father's four-decade rule.

But months later authorities in Libya arrested Seif al-Islam and said they want to prosecute him. Prosecutors in The Hague now say they are willing to hand the case to authorities in Tripoli.

While prosecutors and judges are both part of the court, they operate independently of one another and judges do not have to follow the prosecutors' advice.

Where Gadhafi's son ends up being tried is not only a matter of national importance to Libya's new rulers. It's also of huge consequence to Seif al-Islam himself: if he were to be tried and convicted in The Hague, he could face a maximum life sentence, but if a Libyan court were to find him guilty he could face the death penalty.

Libya remains in turmoil almost a year after Gadhafi's ouster and rival armed militias still pose a serious threat to security in the country. Seif al-Islam is being held by a militia in the town of Zintan.

Libyan lawyer Ahmed al-Jehani, who represented the Libyan government at the court, pledged that Tripoli would give him a fair trial.

It would "be a unique opportunity for national reconciliation for a community that wishes to have justice done at home in Libya," he said.

Al-Jehani said that a "rush to judgment" by the ICC would "render the principle of complementarity meaningless."

But one of Seif al-Islam's court-appointed defense lawyers, Melinda Taylor, said the court should not trust Libya and its fledgling justice system to mount a fair prosecution of the son and one-time heir apparent of the country's widely reviled former leader.

Taylor was jailed in Libya for more than three weeks earlier this year, after being accused by Libyan authorities of passing confidential documents to her client.

She said she wound up in jail after trusting Libyan assurances her visit was privileged, meaning she would not be arrested.

Taylor warned that if the court also trusts Libyan guarantees and sends the case to Tripoli, Seif al-Islam "stands to lose his life in a completely arbitrary manner that has nothing to do with justice."

Seif was originally charged alongside his father and the Gadhafi regime's former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi in June 2011 with attacking civilian protesters in the early days of the popular uprising against Gadhafi's rule. The United Nations Security Council had asked the court to launch an investigation amid widespread reports of human rights abuses by the Gadhafi regime as it fought to cling to power.

Judges dropped the case against Moammar Gadhafi in November 2011 after he was captured and killed by rebel fighters. Al-Senoussi fled the country, but was later captured in Mauritania and extradited to Libya.

A decision on where Seif al-Islam will be tried is expected to take weeks or months.

Jewish Musician with ALS Seeks U.S. Presidency

Abramson for President: New Hope for America through Music

EAST LANSING, Mich., Oct. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lee Abramson, 42, has announced that he is an Independent candidate for the 2012 Presidential election.

Political expertise: His father, Paul Abramson, is a member of the American Political Science Association Hall of Fame, and is widely known as an expert in presidential politics.

Entrepreneurial experience: He is the first person to sell pork rinds on the Internet, and he sold 1000 CD's out of the back of a truck in the two years he was a bass player in a rock band.

Leadership experience: In college, he ran an industrial kitchen, planning meals and stocking food supplies. Later, he became the leader of the Web applications support team at Lotus Development Corporation.

Other credentials: Abramson is arguably the greatest musician since King David, and his two best friends Eric and Elliott (who have the same Hebrew name), and all of his other friends and family say that he brings clarity to contentious issues with the wisdom of Solomon.

Abramson's first act as President will be to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. His second act will be the immediate removal of all troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. He will use those resources to seal the border with Mexico, but only to combat drug trafficking. Abramson will reform immigration policies on the advice of his head of DHS. Abramson supports the use of MDMA in a controlled setting for treating veterans with PTSD.

Defense policy: Nuclear submarines will be the first expenditure to be cut. All employees and military personnel involved in running military nuclear reactors will be shifted into new domestic nuclear power plants. Strategic bombers and fighter planes will comprise the next program to be scaled back. All spending cuts from those programs, specifically research on military aerospace engineering, will be redirected towards establishing more advanced domestic light rail systems and space tourism. The third program to be cut will be tanks and armored personnel carriers because conflicts we are involved in specifically in Afghanistan require foot patrols to engage with civilians, making tanks and armored personnel carriers irrelevant to the conflict there.

Tax policy: Abramson feels that we need to implement a more progressive tax policy. People with higher incomes will pay a higher percentage of their income tax than the middle class.

Healthcare policy: Abramson favors the creation of a new healthcare program called "Americare." Americare will be a cradle-to-grave medical coverage program that will pay for the needs of all United States citizens and allow healthcare providers to be compensated according to their skill set. Americare will replace Medicare, Medicaid and the need for private insurance or supplemental insurance. Abramson feels that private insurance companies are criminal organizations because they profit by delaying and denying care, which could in some instances cause unnecessary deaths and suffering to people who rely on private insurance. Abramson feels that all private insurance companies should be liquidated and all employees should be assigned to positions within the Americare apparatus. Furthermore, Abramson proposes a retroactive inception of the Americare policy that will bring about a "Jubilee year" where any low-income person with medical debt will have that debt forgiven. This policy will be paid for by implementing the tax and defense policies. Abramson will also increase federal spending on medical research, particularly ALS research.

Drug policy: Marijuana will be legalized and taxed, and will be sold only at authorized dispensaries, with a strictly enforced age limit of 18 years for use.

Libya's parliament votes to remove PM from post

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Libya's parliament ousted the country's new prime minister in a no-confidence vote on Sunday, the latest blow to hopes that political factions could agree on a government charged with restoring stability after last year's civil war.

Mustafa Abushagur was the first prime minister to be elected after the 2011 overthrow of dictator Moammar Gadhafi. He represented an offshoot of the country's oldest anti-Gadhafi opposition movement, and was considered a compromise candidate acceptable to both liberals and Islamists.

But his proposed Cabinet was struck down by a legislature representing dozens of divided tribes, towns, and regions across the country, many of whom feel they are owed the spoils of victory over Gadhafi. He was forced to withdraw his first ministerial line-up under pressure and his second attempt to submit one resulted in his ouster.

In a short statement on Libya al-Wataniya TV after the vote, Abushagur said he respected the decision made by the General National Congress as part of Libya's democracy but warned of instability if it takes too long to elect his replacement.

"There should be quickness in the election of the prime minister and formation of the government so the country does not slip into a vacuum," he said.

He had 25 days from his Sep. 12 appointment by parliament to form a Cabinet and win the legislature's approval, but that deadline expired on Sunday. The Congress voted 125 to 44 in favor of removing him as prime minister, with 17 abstaining from voting. He had just put forth 10 names for key ministerial posts Sunday when the no-confidence vote was held.

Until a replacement can be elected by the parliament, management of Libya's government is in the hands of the legislature.

The Congress will have to vote on a new prime minister in the coming weeks. The incoming leader will be responsible for rebuilding Libya's army and police force and removing major pockets of support for the former regime.

On Sunday, around 1,000 people protested in the capital Tripoli outside the congressional headquarters to demand that militias operating alongside the army end a partial siege of the town of Bani Walid, considered a major stronghold of former regime loyalists. They called for a peaceful solution to the standoff that has already sent families fleeing from the town in anticipation of a strike.

Perhaps the single greatest challenge facing any new Libyan leader is the proliferation of ex-rebel militias. One radical Islamist group has been linked to the attack last month on the U.S. Consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi that killed the American ambassador and three others.

There has been a widespread popular backlash against militias since that attack, and the Libyan government has taken advantage of it to try to put some armed groups under the authority of military officers. But some militias have resisted any attempt to fully control them or disarm them.

Any prime minister who wants to impose his authority on the militias will need broad national support for his government ? but such support is hard to get.

Some parliamentarians argued that Abushagur's Cabinet list was not diverse enough and involved too many unknown individuals for key posts. His first proposed Cabinet makeup was also criticized for including too many names from the previous interim government, which was seen by some Libyans as weak and corrupt.

After 40 years of Gadhafi's divide-and-rule tactics and the 2011 war, Libya's towns, tribes and regions are highly polarized. Many feel entitled to high government positions because of their losses in the war against Gadhafi, and are wary of any power wielded by their rivals.

In an indication of the charged atmosphere, Abushagur withdrew the initial line-up for government after the parliamentary chamber was stormed on Thursday by protesters from the city of Zawiya ? one of several cities that took the brunt of Gadhafi's attacks during the war ? demanding representation. Lawmakers left the General National Congress floor, saying they would not vote under pressure.

Before the vote of no-confidence, Abushagur said he was aiming to create a government of national unity that did not appoint ministers according to "quotas."

"The government I proposed is not perfect and was marred by some mistakes, so I changed it for the purpose of national unity," he said.

Independent lawmaker Nizar Kawan, who is aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya, said the Islamist group's party and a liberal coalition led by former rebel prime minister Mahmoud Jibril had been holding talks about replacing Abushagur with an independent figure who has no political background. The candidate would then be tasked with forming a government that is run by well-known professionals and is politically balanced and geographically representative.

Abushagur had taught engineering at the University of Alabama for about 17 years before leaving in 2002. He was active in the opposition abroad against Gadhafi prior to last year's uprising.

According to Libya's transition plan, after the formation of a government a new constitution is to be written and voted upon in a national referendum.

How to Persuade Your Loved One to Seek Professional Help | World ...

How to Persuade Your Loved One to Seek Professional HelpResearch has shown that mental illness tends to disrupt people?s lives even more than physical conditions, said Dr. Mark S. Komrad, MD, a psychiatrist and author of the excellent book You Need Help! A Step-by-Step Plan to Convince a Loved One to Get Counseling.

?On average, a person with depression is at least 50 percent more disabled than someone with angina, arthritis, asthma or diabetes,? according to this report by The Centre for Economic Performance?s Mental Health Policy Group.

The good news is that treatments for mental illness are highly effective. The bad news is that only one out of three people might actually seek help. And some research suggests that the people who need help the most are typically the least likely to get it.

People understand that you can?t treat a lump in your breast on your own, Dr. Komrad said. But that same understanding doesn?t extend to mental illness.

Self-reliance is deeply imbedded in our society?s psyche, he said. That becomes problematic when anything that?s the opposite of self-reliance ? such as dependency ? is viewed as weakness and something to be ashamed of.

People might worry about appearing weak if they seek counseling ? and they might turn that stigma inward and see themselves as weak, Komrad said.

Another big deterrent is lack of insight. Many people with mental illness simply don?t think they?re sick.

That?s why it?s critical for families and friends to step in and help their loved one realize they need to seek counseling. Don?t worry about ?meddling? in their lives, Komrad said. Rather, you have the opportunity and power to improve ? and in some cases, save ? their lives.

Warning Signs

In You Need Help! Komrad lists the specific signs ? along with real-life examples ? that signal an individual needs help. These are some of the signs:

  • Behavior that scares you, such as a significant temper.
  • Problems taking care of themselves or regulating their behavior, such as ignoring basic hygiene, engaging in reckless acts or drinking and acting aggressively.
  • Problems with thinking, such as becoming disoriented, seeing or hearing things that no one else does or forgetting important facts.
  • Intense feelings, such as profound anxiety about leaving the house.
  • Problems interacting with others, such as withdrawing from the people they love.
  • Inability to work, such as not holding down a job or diminishing grades or effort in school.
  • Experiencing trauma, such as abuse or the death of a child.

Ultimately, the key is to look for what Komrad calls ?a change in baseline.? In other words, is your loved one acting differently in any area of their life, including work or home? Komrad said that it?s not unusual to see a person unraveling at home first.

Approaching Your Loved One in the Early Stages

Komrad suggested the following ways to approach your loved one about seeking help in the early stages of mental illness.

  • Let your loved one know that you need to have an important conversation with them. According to Komrad, this helps to focus their attention and implies they should take it seriously.
  • Pick a good time and place. For instance, avoid talking during family gatherings or when you?re fighting.
  • Approach them with empathy. You might say something like ?I know this is really hard for you, but I?m talking to you because I love you. If I didn?t care, we wouldn?t be having this talk.?
  • Be prepared for the person to be upset ? and try not to get defensive.
  • Use ?I? statements, such as ?I?m concerned about you.?
  • Ask for a gift ? literally. Ask your loved one to give you the gift of seeking help, whether it?s for your anniversary, a holiday or your kids? birthdays. Here?s an example from Komrad?s book:

?Getting a consultation with a psychiatrist about your mood swings would be the best thing you could do for our little girl?s birthday. It?s better than anything else that you could possibly give her. Please, do it for her. She, more than anyone, needs you to get some direction and proper help, more help than I know how to give you.?

  • Facilitate the process by finding a professional and scheduling an appointment. Even if they refuse to go, see the practitioner anyway. Talk to them about helping your loved one. Komrad said that 15 percent of his practice is meeting with clients about their loved ones.
  • Offer to pay for the appointment, if possible. A common excuse is that therapy is too pricey.
  • Don?t use words like ?crazy? or ?abnormal.?

Taking Stronger Measures

When your loved one has little insight into their illness ? their ?rationality is diminished? ? or refuses to get help, you?ll need to take stronger measures. Komrad calls these strategies ?therapeutic coercion,? which is akin to tough love.

An especially powerful tool, he said, is to explain to your loved one that families come with certain privileges ? and responsibilities. For instance, if you?re a parent who?s financially supporting your adult child, leverage these privileges to get them to seek a professional evaluation.

If that doesn?t work and your loved one is a danger to themselves or someone else or is very ill, contact the authorities, Komrad said. Research your city?s laws on involuntary evaluation. And show up at every step of the process, he said.

?Don?t just call the authorities and wait.? Show up to the ER and the court hearing. ?When you do show up, tell the story.? In fact, tell the ugliest parts, he said. Talk about the facts that substantiate the seriousness of the situation.

If you?re feeling unsafe for any reason, articulate that to the authorities. If you?re uneasy about bringing your loved one home, communicate that as well. As Komrad said, you don?t want to give the system an easy way out. You want to make sure they grasp the gravity.

Supporting Your Loved One Long-Term

Supporting your loved one through treatment is ?a long-term project,? Komrad said. Check in with them regularly about their treatment and how you can help.

Also, realize that ?a change in them is a change in you,? he said. In other words, as they?re making changes in their life, you might want to seek professional help as well. You might even realize that your relationship is part of the problem. As Komrad said, ?Sometimes relationships can be sick, too.?

As a family member or close friend, you have a lot of power in helping your loved one. Use it.

A man had sons who were always fighting. He one day told them to get a bundle of sticks. Then, he placed the bundle into the hands of each of them and told them to break it and they were unable to do it. He then opened the bundle, took the sticks separately and again put them into his sons' hands, and they broke them easily. He said: if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other you will be uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies but if you are divided you will be broken as easily as sticks.

CotW! How have you been my friend?! I haven't been on here in the longest time and when I logged on I didn't know if anyone qould respond to the other RP so I just decided start from scratch! :p And in response to your question yes I do!

@ceh12, I'm not reserving any spots as of yet. I hope to have this RP up and running before Friday so as long as you send something in and it fits all the requirements, you are in.
