World Gold Council Warns Investors About Fed QE Tapering ...

August 1, 2013

James O'Dell

August 1, 2013, Los Angeles ? Gold was modestly lower on Wednesday, as the price to invest in the precious metal eased 0.15 percent or $2.00 to close at $1,323.60 an ounce, following a very choppy trading day that saw the Gold price see-saw dramatically after the close of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, but still finished July with Gold's biggest monthly gain since January 2012. The price to invest in Silver rose 0.36 percent or $0.07 to close at $19.77 an ounce, while the Gold/Silver ratio slipped to 66.95 after hitting a new three year high on Tuesday, as Silver outperformed Gold.

The World Gold Council (WGC) used the Fed's July policy meeting as an opportunity to caution investors against hanging on every word from Fed Chairman Bernanke's mouth. In its latest research paper titled "Gold and the US interest rates: a reality check" the WGC warns against giving too much credence to the Fed's announcements that it may or may not taper its quantitative easing (QE) program.

"While negative interest rates support Gold investment demand and rising rates increase the cost of investing in it," says the report. "A normal rate environment ? with real interest rates ranging between 0 percent and 4 percent or approximately 2.5 percent to 6.5 percent in nominal terms ? is not automatically adverse to Gold. In such a rate environment, Gold's inclusion in a portfolio has historically been beneficial to investors."

Gold investments have been very positive, historically, with long term average annual returns of between six and seven percent, claims the WGC, and when investors put too much emphasis on U.S. interest rates, it "oversimplifies the issues currently at play," said the WGC's Juan Carlos Artigas. "In the event of a return to a more normalized real rate environment in the U.S. it is worth remembering that investment demand is not the only arbiter of Gold prices, nor does it originate solely in the US," said Artigas, as he points to the Asian market where Gold consumption jumped 132 percent between 2007 and 2012 in China.

"Even with the highest rate of interest, the core value of Gold is to balance out a portfolio," says Artigas. "Most investors are under allocated; optimal levels are identified as between 2 percent and 10 percent." Philadelphia row house collapses, injuring eight

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A row house collapse Monday severely damaged neighboring houses and hurt eight people, including a baby and a critically injured contractor.

The collapse happened shortly after 11 a.m. at an unoccupied home being remodeled in the middle of a south Philadelphia street lined with connected two-story brick homes.

The contractor was working in the basement of the destroyed home, police said. Investigators were trying to figure out what happened, but neighbors reported hearing an explosion.

Bricks showered onto the small street and nearly covered a car parked out front. The houses on either side of the destroyed home were standing but badly damaged, with large sections of their masonry walls gone.

Rescue crews combed through the rubble for victims. They said early Monday afternoon that the search was complete and no one was unaccounted for.

Nearby gas service was turned off and the area evacuated. Residents with nowhere to go were taken to a nearby school, which was being used as a temporary shelter.

"I was in the shower and I thought my house was about to fall down," said Christie Scibblo, a 26-year-old mother of four who lives four houses down from the collapsed home. "I ran outside and I saw a firefighter rescuing an infant."

Scibblo said she also saw firefighters hosing down a man who had been burned.

Daniel Killian, 19, who lives across the narrow street from the house that collapsed, said he smelled gas shortly before the collapse.

Joseph Szymborski, 33, was jolted from his bed when he heard what sounded like an explosion and ran outside to find "the house was in the street."

He ran down the street and said he helped neighbors and rescuers look through the rubble, though he was worried about the remains of the damaged buildings falling on him.

"It's situations like this, you just come together as a neighborhood," he said.

Gas and electrical utility crews were on the scene. Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission spokeswoman Jennifer Kocher said the agency also had two inspectors there but that it was still unclear what happened.

The state regulatory agency would have jurisdiction if the explosion occurred outside the home but not if it occurred inside, Kocher said.

Last month, a collapse at a downtown Philadelphia demolition site killed six people and injured 12 when a large wall fell on an adjacent thrift store. A machinery operator is charged with involuntary manslaughter and a grand jury is weighing whether anyone else should be charged.

Bush 41 shaves head in support of 2-year-old cancer patient

By Jeff Black, Staff Writer, NBC News

(NBC) - When George H.W. Bush ? aka "Bush 41" ? was president he famously gave out awards for his "thousand points of light" as a way to recognize people doing noble volunteer work.

And now that the ex-president has shaved his head in solidarity with a 2-year-old leukemia patient, Patrick, maybe he should give himself one of those points of light.

Patrick is the son of a Secret Service agent, Jon, who is assigned to Bush's security detail in Kennebunkport, Maine.? (Their last names were withheld at the family's request.)

Recently, other members of the security unit started to bare their domes in support of Patrick, and they started to raise money for his treatment.

The 89-year-old Bush and his wife, Barbara, took notice. They had lost their second child, Robin, to leukemia 60 years ago in October at the age of 4.

Members of the Secret Service unit known as Bush Protective Division even launched a website to help raise money to pay Patrick's medical bills: PatricksPals.org. They have also organized a benefit motorcycle run in Kennebunkport, where the Bushes maintain a seaside home.

So, the former president and first lady made a donation, and he even went as far as shaving his head? earlier this week.

A news release sent out of Bush's office raised attention to the effort to help Patrick.

Egg-munching parasite wasp hitch-hikes on a damselfly

Why make your own way when you can score a free ride? A newly discovered species of parasitoid wasp is the first of its kind seen catching a lift on much larger damselflies.

Andrew Polaszek at London's Natural History Museum and colleagues captured this photo of three of the cheeky wasps in action. The female wasps are clustered around the base of a damselfly's abdomen, waiting for her to descend on water to lay eggs (also shown in the video, top).

The wasps then spring into action: laying their own eggs inside the damselfly's eggs. The wasp larvae later eat the damselfly's unhatched offspring for breakfast. Not the most gracious of thank yous for a free flight.

The species has been appropriately named Hydrophylita emporos ? emporos is Latin for "passenger". It is the fifth member of the genus to be identified, and the first in its genus to be found in the Old World, having been identified in northern Taiwan.

Inevitably, other parasitoid wasps also display anti-social behaviour: one species is known to create zombified insects, for example. However, another variety is useful, to us at least, as it helps to control common human pests. In 2011, a housefly infestation at Edinburgh Zoo was cleared by introducing a parasitoid wasp species native to the UK.

Happy, Healthy, & Domestic: I Love My Family Photo Blocks

No, a tornado didn't blow through my house, I finally finished unpacking all my craft supplies! I had been putting it off, waiting for the walls to be painted so I could arrange things better. Well the walls aren?t done yet and I had enough digging through boxes when I needed something for a project. So I went through all my supplies, got rid of stuff I won?t use, threw away several bags worth of trash, and gave everything a home so I know where to find it.

In the process of doing all that, I came across several unfinished projects that have been on my to do list for a looooong time.

Like this one. We made these photo blocks, oh I don?t know, about a year ago for a ladies craft night. I didn?t have pictures of my boys at the time so they?ve sat unfinished until now.

It was super simple, the printouts and original idea are found HERE. You just cut 2x4s into squares (approx. 3 1/4?), paint them whatever color you want, then ModPodge the printouts and pictures on. Simple enough. Well, don?t make the mistake I did. When you put the ModPodge under the paper, let that dry first before going over the top with ModPodge. That?s why mine bubbled. I might eventually get around to redoing it, but for now I?m just happy it?s done.

It took me so long though, my pictures are outdated. haha. So little and so cute!

Even Andrew looks so young!

Technically I have one more block that I was going to put a picture of me and my husband on, but I printed it too big and wouldn?t fit. So I guess it?s really not completely finished, but close enough for now. haha
